Films on my PC january 2009
31 days, 32 long-feature films. Best DVD: Verdens undergang / Himmelskibet Nice cinematography that reminds a bit of Jaenzon. These are two rather kitschy films but they are very touching.

John Bauer, Åmells
For the first time in my life, I saw a painting by John Bauer FOR REAL. I had discovered his work via books and the Internet and complained a lot about the infrequently exhibitions dedicated to him. The painting I saw disapeared some days ago. Åmells found a client. What a pity for us…

Carmen, Prosper Mérimée
I knew the opera, the films, but had never read the book. The linguistic part is the most interesting since Mérimée was a mysticist interested in culture and languages. I would recommend this short story to all the ones who only knew Carmen by Bizet.

Doktor Glas, Hjalmar Söderberg
I like Doktor Glas. He is no hypocrite and the questions Söderberg discusses in this book are still interesting. Moral is never a simple issue.

August Strindberg, 160 år
On the 22th of January, I usually visit the Strindberg museum. a) He was my twin b) The museum is free on this day Weirdly though, no paper named Strindberg’s 160th birthday. I wanted to check that Inferno was available in Swedish and got to know that it had been sold out for 4 years and that no new edition was actual. That’s a really weird way to promote culture…

Skräckens Labyrinter, H.P. Lovecraft
The Lurking Fear The Nameless City The Colour Out of Space The Hound In the Vault Pickman’s Model The Rats in the Walls The Moon Bog The Outsider Lovecraft should have been adapted by Tarkovsky. Both like unknown archives, secrets buried in the soil and uncertain ways to understand the world.

En Vandrer spiller med Sordin, Knut Hamsun
That’s the fifth novel by Hamsun I read. I like Hamsun’s style which is somewhere between the inner monologue, the diary and the dialogue. The plot was not really exciting, but the fever that was communicated to the reader was very strong. I must say that I am a bit surprised none of his books was called fever…

Discours de la Méthode, René Descartes
It was the first time for 12 years or so that I read this text again. I realized that Descartes was rather narrow-minded. I only liked the last part of this philosophical text, where he describes his method to order ideas. Discours de la Méthode was no aha experience and only inspired me to read more philosophy this year.

Inta Ruka: Amalias Street 5a
First time at Moderna Museet this year. Saw some photographs and reflected a bit about what modern art is meant to be. Liked a lot to see some “new” or at least better exposed Duchamp and Brancusi works. It was a nice afternoon indeed.

Dorés Bibel, Torgny Lindgren
It is only possible to describe the world with the help of images. This book is weird. The form is a reflexion about words and art. I wonder if an art exhibition with an audio guide hadn’t been more relevant. The use of words is good, but one misses the Doré dimension, the pictural one.

Die Welle, Dennis Gansel
A film called The Wave should have exploited another kind of esthetic than a college film’s one. The actors and the script were good but the mise en scène was rather poor. There was no stylistic opposition between the mass and the individs or between the classroom and the outside world. Only the long and empty corridors could remind us of some totalitarian films. One should make a remake of...

2008: digital degenerescence
It finally finished. 365 days to wonder how to combine money earning, free time, family life and culture. For the first time since I was a teenager, I have not even seen my average “at least one film per week” on a silver screen. Instead, I streamed, borrowed and loaned digital copies (all legal of course). The good point is that I did not get angry at the audience. The bad point is...

Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë
Long and predictable story of a young orphan whose duty is to be calm and polite. I think Octave Mirbeau was a better feminist in his Journal d’une Femme de Chambre than Charlotte Brontë in her novel.
